GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking an individual with demonstrated management skills to join an outstanding team of faculty, staff and administrators to provide high quality services to our district, our community, and most importantly to our students. Under general direction, the Dean of Agriculture/Natural Resources is a supervisory management position responsible for the overall administration, supervision, and coordination of the Agriculture/Natural Resources Department, including Shone Farm, the Dutton Agricultural Pavillon and contracted farm services. This is a full-time, twelve months per year, educational administrator position that reports to the Dean of Career & Technical Education and Economic Development. Appointments are contingent upon funding and approval of the Board of Trustees.
DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The Agriculture Program at Santa Rosa Junior College is made up of seven full-time and approximately twenty-five adjunct instructors. The program serves over 2,500 students and is the largest community college agriculture program in California. It was recently recognized as the California Agriculture Teacher’s Association 2010 Outstanding Agriculture Community College Program. The instructional program comprises over fifteen diversified program areas, serving the needs of vocational and transfer students. Hands-on instruction is also provided at SRJC’s 365-acre Shone Farm. Shone Farm includes 120 acres of forest, 100 acres of pasture for cow/calf, sheep and horse herds, 70 acres of vineyard, 12 acres for crop production, and 4 acres of olive and apple trees. The Warren G. Dutton Ag Pavilion opened in 2007 to facilitate further growth in the Agriculture/Natural Resources Department at Santa Rosa Junior College.
SCOPE
The Dean, Agriculture/Natural Resource contributes to the development of policies and procedures pertaining to the instructional program of the District, and has major responsibility for interpretation and implementation of these policies and procedures, including the selection and evaluation of managers, faculty and classified staff, curriculum development, scheduling of classes, and program budget development and monitoring. The Dean is also responsible for maintaining effective working relationships with community partners and donors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Develops and maintains Shone Farm as a laboratory for the instructional programs within the Ag/Natural Resources Department, and as a viable economic entity within the organization of the college; assists with recruitment, selection and evaluation of faculty, managers, and classified staff; convenes regularly scheduled meetings with faculty, managers, and classified staff; works with faculty on curriculum development and review, including the development and assessment of student learning outcomes; in consultation with faculty, develops the schedule of classes, monitors enrollments and faculty loads; works with department on short and long-term program planning, review and evaluation; receives, reviews and facilitates resolution of student, faculty, or staff complaints; in collaboration with department faculty and managers, prepares and monitors program budgets; pursues resource development opportunities, including researching and writing grant proposals that support the department, including Shone Farm; facilitates collaboration across campus departments; attends department industry advisory committee meetings; collaborates with the Shone Farm Foundation Board and ensures that the Shone Farm Winery is operated in accordance with established policies and governmental regulations; supervises the management of the Shone Farm Winery and Agriculture Pavilion; manages the rental of Shone Farm facilities to off-campus groups and organizations; enforces District policies related to the serving of wine at Shone Farm; makes recommendations to the President regarding any events where a wine service permit is requested; collaborates with Ag Trust members and oversees the expenditures of Ag Trust funds; represents the Ag department to the campus community, with other agencies and in the community at large; works with faculty, staff and community members to promote the instructional offerings, in addition to marketing products from Shone Farm, including Shone Farm Winery; oversees all contracted supervises related to the management of the Shone Farm vineyard and orchards; works with the vineyard contractor and SRJC Purchasing Department in negotiating winery contracts; serves on standing and adhoc committees as required; maintains appropriate fiscal and expenditure controls to assure that federal, state, county, and college law, regulations, and procedures and audit standards are observed; performs other duties and coordinates major projects as assigned by the Dean, Career and Technical Education and Economic Development.
COMPENSATION PACKAGE
• Salary Range: $7,996 - $9,599 per month (2010/11 Management Salary Schedule); salary reflects a 4% reduction for the 10/11 year with an equivalent amount of time off); maximum initial placement at $8,797 (placement within this range based on experience as documented in application materials.) An additional 2% compensation will be added to the base salary for an earned doctorate degree. This position will also be entitled to a $150 per month administrative allowance.
• Benefits: The District offers a competitive benefit package which includes health & welfare (medical/dental/vision/life/long-term disability) benefits for employees and eligible dependents. The Dean, Agriculture/Natural Resources may join either State Teacher’s or Public Employee’s Retirement Systems (depending on prior membership).
• Leave/Holiday time: Management employees earn 1 day of sick leave and 1.8333 days of vacation for each month worked. They are also entitled to holidays recognized by the District (14 holidays/year).

QUALIFICATIONS
Required Knowledge and Abilities:
Current trends and issues in the agriculture industry and in agriculture education; sound business practices as related to operations of a farm, such as the 365 acre Shone Farm; Equal Opportunity Employment, hiring, and evaluation procedures; local, state, and federal employment regulations; principles of planning, budgeting, and supervision; Chancellor’s Office regulations and District policies governing community college career and technical education programs, including course and program approval; standard format for preparation of grant proposals, contracts, and subcontracts; interpreting and enforcing faculty and classified collective bargaining contracts; program review and evaluation processes.
Ability to lead and implement strategic planning; make operational decisions, organize and prioritize work, and solve complex problems on a daily basis; relate effectively with a wide diversity of students, faculty, staff and community members; work in an atmosphere of collegial decision-making, demonstrate consensus-building skills; communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; experience in public speaking; advocate for the District’s programs and services.
Required Education/Experience: A Master’s Degree in Agriculture or related field AND two years of formal training, internship or leadership experience reasonably related to administrative assignment; OR the equivalent. Candidates must also qualify for a current SRJC faculty discipline. Requires a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Preferred:
• Meet minimum qualifications for the Agriculture/Natural Resources discipline.
• Teaching experience at the community college level.
• Industry experience in Agriculture for a minimum of an accumulative two year period.
